PODIATRIST DISCUSSES BUNIONS

"A bunion happens gradually over time. Usually it's hereditary, so it happens slowly. You don't start off with it in most cases but around age thirty, forty, or fifty it starts to pop up and all of a sudden you have this growth and it looks like this thing came out the side of your foot. Women hurt more because they tend to wear dress shoes so it does hurt more, but it depends upon if there's any arthritis in the joint," says Doug Tumen, DPM, Hudson Valley Foot Associates, and author of Ask the Foot Doctor.

"We categorize bunions as mild, moderate, and severe. Based on x-rays, a podiatrist can determine what procedure needs to be performed and how much time you will need to get back on your feet. This can be as short as two weeks, but can be as long as six weeks," says Dr. Tumen.
