"Achilles tendonitis is extraordinarily common in runners, and many people find it is just stiff when they start to run and then it loosens up," said Dr. Marc Ginsburg, a podiatrist. Where the pain or a possible tear is located can determine how fast you can recover. "If it is up where the muscle becomes tendon, it tends to be a longer period to recover. If it is there, it tends to be where the tendon attaches to the bone, and you might be able to resolve it a little quicker," explained Ginsburg.

The symptoms are often felt with the first steps you take in the morning. "Initially a tightness, dull, sharp pain that forces you to walk on the ball of your foot," noted Ginsburg. However, if you go long enough without treatment, things can become chronic. Ginsburg said, "That's called tendonosis and is very, very difficult to eradicate."
