  • PODIATRIST COMMENTS ON INCREASING FOOT SIZE OVER THE PAST 40 YEARS
Podiatrist Lorraine Jones states, "expanding waistlines are now a common sight - but they're not the only part of us that's getting bigger. The average British foot is now two sizes bigger than it was in 1970, new figures have revealed. In the past 40 years, the average male foot has risen from a size eight to a size 10, while the typical woman’s foot is now size six as opposed to four. The study, by the College of Podiatry, in London, found that as people have become taller and heavier, their feet have become larger. Feet are getting bigger because as a nation, we are becoming taller and we’re increasing in weight. Increased weight gain places more pressure on the feet and means ligaments and joints need to work harder to maintain the foot’s structure and keep you mobile. Over time, if you gain weight, the feet splay to try to accommodate the increased pressure. This can cause pain, lead to mobility issues, and increase the risk of developing osteoarthritis in the lower limb joints."
