Podiatrist, Dr. Haim Cohen states, "If you're like most people, you probably run to maintain mental clarity and relieve stress. If you don't take your regimen seriously, you may end up adding stress to your life – in the form of an overuse injury. Anyone who walks can develop a stress fracture. You don’t have to be unhealthy or have medical problems. A stress fracture usually leads to pain and swelling early on. However, typically, for the first two to four weeks, you aren’t even able to see a stress fracture on an x-ray. Treatment: An x-ray may not show there is a stress fracture for up to four to six weeks after the fracture occurred, so your doctor may order a bone scan or MRI to help diagnose. Since a stress fracture is a break in the bone, treatment requires a significant amount of rest for it to heal, usually six to eight weeks. Most of the time a walking boot will be prescribed for protection. Stress fractures will take people out of their sporting activities for quite some time."
