Podiatrists Drs. John Connors and Hal Ornstein state, "put down the flimsy flip-flops and wear a pair of sneakers to the beach instead. Wearing generic flip-flops can do some serious damage to your feet. However, they don't have to be given up completely. If you want to continue wearing flip-flops, you have to change the types you’re wearing. Or you have to switch between the regular flip-flops and a more supportive shoe throughout the day. It is important to wear sandals with arch support to prevent overpronation, which is when your arch collapses too much and your ankle and foot roll inward, distributing your weight unevenly and affecting your overall body alignment. Sometimes even wearing sandals with a two-inch heel can actually be beneficial for your foot arch and help prevent overpronation."At our Toronto foot clinic, Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics we always advise our patients on the proper foot wear such as avoiding high heels and always wear supportive foot wear and whenever possible custom orthotics.

Brought to you by Dr. John A. Hardy, owner of Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics.
