MANY PEOPLE ARE UNAWARE THAT THEY HAVE ONYCHOMYCOSIS (FUNGAL NAILS)

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail. Onychomycosis can lead to complications such as pain and embarrassment which can in turn effective a person's daily life and work life. However, many individuals may not known they have a fungal infection until it spreads to all their nails which is when it becomes harder to treat. Onychomycosis in fact is hard to treat due to the slow growth of the nail and the protective nature of the nail plate.

The most common fungi that infect the nail include Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Many people can get a fungal infection from their use of occlusive footwear, walking barefoot in locker rooms and by sweaty feet which is a good environment for bacteria and fungus.

There are four types of common presentations of fungal nails, these include: distal subungal onychomycosis, distal lateral onychomycosis, proximal subungal onychomysis and white superficial onychomycosis. Thus, care should be taken to correctly identify signs and symptoms of onychomycosis and also other diseases that may mimic the presentation of onychomycosis such as: psoriasis, lichen plans, onychodystrophies, trauma and congenital issues. As such, it is important to visit a Chiropodist/foot specialist to help diagnose your nails and to seek treatment immediately to help prevent the spread of the the fungal infection!
