  • MAGGOTS SAVING MORE PATIENTS' LIMBS IN HOSPITAL: SINGAPORE PODIATRISTS

PODIATRISTS, ADRIAAN ERASMUS AND CHELSEA LAW STATED THAT, "MAGGOTS ARE USED MOSTLY ON DIABETIC WOUNDS, ULCERS AND BED SORES.  MAGGOTS ARE CHEAPER, QUICKER, AND LESS RISKY THAN CONVENTIONAL METHODS SUCH AS SURGERY.  THE MAGGOTS WILL FEED ONLY ON DEAD TISSUE COMPARED TO SURGERY, WHICH MAY BE TOO AGGRESSIVE AS THE SURGEONS MAY REMOVE SOME OF THE HEALTHY TISSUE AS WELL.  A SMALL STUDY OF 14 PATIENTS WHO UNDERWENT MAGGOT THERAPY AT TAN TOCK SENG HOSPITAL IN 2008 FOUND THAT NEARLY HALF OF THEM COULD BE REMOVED FROM THE AMPUTATION LIST.  ONCE THE WOUND IS DETERMINED TO BE SUITED FOR THE THERAPY, THE MAGGOTS ARE PUT ON GAUZE AND PLACED INTO THE WOUND.  THE AREA IS THEN BANDAGED.  AFTER 2 TO 3 DAYS, THE MAGGOTS ARE FLUSHED OUT WITH SALINE WATER AND DISPOSED OF.  ABOUT 200 MAGGOTS ARE NEEDED TO TREAT A WOUND THE SIZE OF A 50-CENT COIN."
