IN-TOEING DISCUSSED BY KENTUCKY PODIATRIST

Podiatrist, Dr. Nicole freels states, "do your child’s feet resemble those of Tommy, the cute baby from the popular Rugrats cartoon? Turned in, with toes pointed at each other? A balanced gait is considered to be walking with your toes and feet pointing straight forward, but many children begin walking with their feet pointing slightly inward. This is what we call in-toeing, or being pigeon toed. Let’s face it – watching toddlers learn to walk (and trip) over their own feet can be adorable to see and it’s a trait among infants and children that they typically outgrow. However, there are a few things parents should know about this condition. The three most common causes of in-toeing are metatarsus adductus, tibial torsion, and femoral anteversion. To correct the more severe forms of in-toeing, podiatrists use conservative methods such as braces, shoe inserts, and special shoes. Oftentimes, the child just needs a small insert (small, ridged, molded plastic piece) inserted into the shoe to help the process along. Only in rare cases do doctors suggest a brace of some kind, otherwise an orthotic device and a little time will do the trick."

At our Toronto foot clinic, Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics we suggest to all of our patients who are parents that they should have their children checked about 6 months after they start walking to make sure that everything in the lower limb is properly aligned.  Children are the key because 'as the twig is bent, so grows the tree'.  Biomechanical and postural problems if caught and corrected at a young age will save the  child many years of grief later on in life.
