HOW TO PREVENT INGROWN TOE NAILS

According to Wagner Santiago, DPM, "There are various reasons why an ingrown toenail can occur. Tight footgear, improper cutting of nails, trauma to the nail, thickening of the nail, or sometimes there is a hereditary component that can cause a painful ingrown nail. The problem is the nail grows into the side of the skin which creates a red, inflamed, draining toe. It is painful to just have the sheets on your bed touch it, much less try to stuff it in a shoe. Occasionally there is pus accumulated under the skin and if left for long periods of time, can affect the bone leading to bone infection."

"Since the nail grows from the base of the nail bed, cutting a “V” at the end of the nail only makes the nail look “fancy”, but does nothing for the ingrown. However, trying to cut the nail straight across and not tearing the nails off in the corner (or “in the quick”) can prevent the start of the problem. Avoiding tight shoes can also be a benefit. When those options are no longer providing relief, it is time to call a chiropodist or podiatrist who treats foot and ankle problems and has performed ingrown toenail procedures," says Dr. Santiago.
