Rheumatoid ArthritisSeveral studies suggest rheumatoid arthritis as being a deadly risk factor for blood clotting. The analysis found that patients with rheumatoid arthritis were more likely to develop potentially fatal blood clots, three times more likely to develop a DVT, or deep vein thrombosis, and twice as likely to develop a pulmonary embolism, or PE.

About 11-30% of people who are diagnosed with either a DVT or PE have died within 30 days of their diagnosis. The study also found that 77% of the patients who were affected by rheumatoid arthritis were female, with the average age of diagnosis being 52 and one in five of the patients being over the age of 65. The patients that were studied were also likely to have other conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

If you are suffering from foot pain and think it might be caused by arthritis, you should seek the care of a chiropodist like Marz Hardy, D.Ch., B.Sc., Podiatric Medicine of Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics. Marz can examine your foot pain and identify any potential conditions.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. As a result, inflammation of the lining and the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur.

Symptoms

- Swelling & pain of the feet
- Stiffness in the feet
- Pain on the ball or sole of feet
- Joint shift or deformation can occur

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is usually necessary for the podiatrist to treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine what could have triggered the condition. The Rheumatoid Factor Test helps determine if someone is affected by the disease.

Treatment

Treating RA is usually a lifelong process that includes a variety of methods and therapy. Your doctor will prescribe special shoes that help with arch and heel support, and a physical therapist will assist with joint flexibility.
