Flip-flops may be comfortable to wear during summer weather, but many people don’t realize that they can wreak havoc on the feet. Overuse of this style of footwear can lead to the development of hammertoes, bone injuries, and tendonitis. Some doctors speculate that they may be just as bad for the feet as high heels, if not more so.

However, that doesn’t mean that flip-flops should be avoided at all times. It’s best to wear them every once in a while, and only in situations where you won’t be doing any strenuous physical activities. “There's only 26 little bones in the feet compared to the rest of the body so if you start throwing your foot off from a biomechanical standpoint, the next thing it goes is to the knees, the next place is the hip, next place is the back so it's important that you start with your feet,” said physician Dr. Valerie Tallerico. “Have the best shoe support that you can.”

Hammertoe is one of the most common problems that occur from wearing flip-flops excessively. If your toe appears to be deformed, make an appointment with chiropodist Marz Hardy of Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics. Marz Hardy can identify whether or not you have a hammertoe and determine the best course of action to take to treat it.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is little-known a painful condition that affects the second, third and fourth toes involving different joints of the toe and foot. Hammertoe can be caused by many other conditions such as RA (rheumatoid arthritis), osteoarthritis, trauma or injuries to your foot, it can be hereditary and it can also be caused by a cerebral vascular accident. If you wear shoes that are too narrow or short for your feet, it may exacerbate any pain you already have.

It is really important to your overall well-being to seek out medical attention at the first signs of foot pain or anything that may hinder your ability to walk in a normal manner. Taking care of your feet is one of the first steps to being able to live a full and healthy life.
