  • DR. HARDY, OWNER OF ACADEMY FOOT AND ORTHOTIC CLINICS DISCUSSES R.I.C.E., REST, ICE, COMPRESSION AND ELEVATION

R.I.C.E. IS AN IMPORTANT ACRONYM IN THE HEALING ARTS PROFESSION.  IT STANDS FOR REST, ICE COMPRESSION AND ELEVATION WHICH ARE VERY IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO TO TREAT INJURIES, ESPECIALLY ACUTE INJURIES TO COMBAT INFLAMMATION.  INFLAMMATION IS ONE OF THE BODY'S INBORN PROTECTIVE MECHANISMS, UNFORTUNATELY IN MOST CASES THE BODY TENDS TO OVER-REACT AND IT HAS A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON THE HEALING PROCESS.  RESEARCHERS HAVE FOUND MY REDUCING INFLAMMATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER THE INJURY, THE HEALING TIME CAN BE GREATLY REDUCED.  ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS IS THE APPLICATION OF ICE.  THIS IS A POWERFUL VASOCONSTRICTOR AND PREVENTS THE BODY FROM POOLING THE INFLAMMATION.  THERE ARE BYPRODUCTS OF INFLAMMATION WHICH HAVE TOXIC EFFECTS IN TISSUE AND CAN RESULT IN DELAYED HEALING AND HEALING WITH SCAR TISSUE WHICH IS ALWAYS A NEGATIVE RESULT WHICH IF IT HAPPENS TO INVOLVE A JOINT , MUSCLE OR TENDON AND CAN RESULT IN LOSS OF FUNCTION.  ONE DRAWBACK OF ICE IS THAT IT TENDS TO BE UNCOMFORTABLE, BUT ONCE THE INITIAL DISCOMFORT IS OVER IT HAS AN ANESTHETIC EFFECT.  THEN AFTER THE ICE IS REMOVED THERE IS A REFLEX KNOWN AS THE 'HUNTING RESPONSE'  WHERE THERE BE A A TEMPORARY INCREASE IN BLOOD FLOW.

REST IS ALWAYS AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT TO MANAGING AN INJURY.  THE GREATER THE DEGREE OF INJURY USUALLY THE MORE PAIN WE EXPERIENCE, WHICH BECOMES FORCED REST.  MANY TIMES THIS IS THE HARDEST THING TO GET A PATIENT TO DO AS INACTIVITY IS HARD FOR MOST PEOPLE OR REFRAINING FROM YOUR FAVOURITE SPORT, ETC.

COMPRESSION IS ACHIEVED BY APPLYING A TENSOR OR COMPRESSION STOCKING , BANDAGE ETC. IF THE INJURED AREA IS RECEPTIVE.  IT IS NOT PRACTICAL TO TREAT ALL PARTS OF THE BODY WITH COMPRESSION.

ELEVATING THE INJURED AREA USES GRAVITY TO PREVENT POOLING IF POSSIBLE ALSO DECREASES INFLAMMATION OR RATHER THE POOLING .

THESE ARE THINGS THAT ANY INDIVIDUAL WHO RECEIVES AN INJURY CAN DO ON THEIR OWN AT HOME WITHOUT CONSULTING A PHYSICIAN.  IF YOU ATTEND OUR FOOT CLINIC WE CAN ASSIST YOU BY USING PHYSICAL THERAPY ADJUNCTS SUCH AS ULTRASOUND, INTERFERENTIAL CURRENT, LASER, SHOCKWAVE THERAPY.  OUR CLINICIANS ARE ALSO TRAINED IN A.R.T OR ACTIVE RELEASE THERAPY WHICH IS A VERY SUCCESSFUL PATENTED SOFT TISSUE TREATMENT.

ACADEMY FOOT AND ORTHOTIC CLINICS RECEIVES EXCELLENT RESULTS AS WE ARE EXTREMELY DEDICATED TO THE WELFARE OF OUR PATIENTS AND ALWAYS GO ABOVE AND BEYOND WHEN IT COMES TO PATIENT CARE.  IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE WOULD LIKE HONEST, COMPETENT ADVICE OR TREATMENT, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CALL OUR FOOT CLINIC AT 416-465-8737.
