For people living with diabetes, foot care is paramount. Minor issues can turn into serious infections which can lead to amputations. Diligent foot care is more important during winter when cold temperatures and slushy sidewalks make it more difficult to keep feet warm and dry. Frostbite and blistering of the toes may result, warned Dr. Marc Leonard, OSF HealthCare podiatrist.

Dr. Leonard recommends wearing shoes or boots that provide protection from the cold, snow, and ice. Daily foot inspections are vital to check for breaks in the skin, changes in color, or other abnormalities. Early detection makes treatment easier before issues become complicated. In addition, keep blood sugar levels in check and follow your healthcare provider's advice regarding nutrition, exercise, and medication, he said.
