“Are you having any numbness, tingling, or burning in your feet?” They’re common questions, Dr. Chelsea Viola, a podiatric surgeon on the medical staff of Lee Health, asks patients who are living with diabetes. “The biggest thing with diabetes is a lot of patients end up getting nerve pain. If a patient develops burning, tingling, or numbness in their feet, it’s time to make an appointment with a podiatrist. “There are some things we can do to help the symptoms. Reversal of nerve damage is very difficult. Once you get to the numbness, there’s really no reversing that,” she said.
