What is COPD?

COPD is one of the most common lung diseases that causes problems with breathing. There are two main forms of COPD: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD is progressive meaning it comes on slowly and gets worse with time.
 

Three main risk factors include:

1.Smoking
2.Genetics
3. Environmental factors – which include exposure to air pollution, dust, chemical fumes and second hand smoking
 
Symptoms of COPD include:
- wheezing
- coughing
- difficulty breathing
- swelling in the legs
- digital clubbing
- cyanosis: blue fingertips or toes
 
COPD and the Foot
 

COPD impacts many aspects of the body, including the feet. Individuals with COPD may suffer from:

-Swelling in the legs, ankles, feet
-Digital Clubbing
 
Swelling in the Feet
 
Some ways to prevent/manage this include:
-Elevating your legs above heart level
-Dietary restrictions (salt and water restrictions)
-Daily exercise
-Getting your shoes sized at the end of the day
-Using seamless socks
 
Keep your Feet Healthy
 

Some tips to protect your feet are to:

-Check your feet daily using mirrors.
-Visit a Chiropodist for regular foot care.
-Do not cut corns/calluses yourself.
-Buy comfortable and well-fitting footwear.
-Buy seamless socks or flip your socks inside out to avoid tight edges.
