CHIROPODY/PODIATRY

Chiropody is a model that has been used since the 1700′s and the profession has been advancing rapidly within the recent past. In addition to treating nails, corns, calluses,  verrucas and providing excellent palliative care, the profession now includes the assessment of bio-mechanics, practicing musculoskeletal medicine and soft tissue surgery.

The title Podiatrist originally came from the USA and is now becoming very popular in the UK. Within the profession it is widely becoming accepted that Chiropody is used for palliative foot care and Podiatry is used for more advanced work such as minor surgery. But this is not the case.

Scope of Practice:

Both chiropodists and podiatrists are primary health care providers whose area of expertise is the foot and lower extremity.  They both exist and practice in Canada. According to the Chiropody Act of 1991, a chiropodist in Ontario can perform the following:

  • Cutting into subcutaneous tissues of the foot.
  • Administering, by injection into feet, a substance designated in the regulations.
  • Prescribing drugs designated in the regulations.
  • Administering, by inhalation, a substance designated in the regulations.
