Heather Dubrow's Son at the HospitalNicholas Dubrow, the son of one of the Real Housewives of Orange County, was in the hospital last week because of a painful bone condition called Sever’s disease.  Sever’s disease in an inflammation of the growth plate around the heel, and typically effects kids during periods of rapid growth.

Mother Heather Debrow—who recently whispered some words to a ride operator that ultimately left costar Tamara in the same hospital with a mechanical bull injury—posted a picture of her son’s leg wrapped tightly in a cast on Instagram and publically voiced her appreciation for the doctor.  “Thank you SO much to our dear friend Dr. Scott Forman for taking care of Nicky!! #sever'sdisease #inflammationofthegrowthplate #castfortwoweeks.”

Nicholas seems to be recovering successfully, but is only one of many his age who suffer from this condition.  If your child is experiencing pain in the foot or ankle, see chiropodist Marz Hardy of Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics.  Marz Hardywill provide the necessary care to ensure a fast and easy recovery.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease, also known as calcaneal apophysitis, is a medical condition that causes heel pain in one or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. The constant pain this causes at the back of the heel can make the child unable to put any weight on the heel and walk only on the toes.

Walk in such a way that avoids placing weight on the heel is called “toe gait,” and can lead to additional problems in the future.

Symptoms

Acute pain is often associated with Sever’s disease, and is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.
