CANADIAN PODIATRIST DISCUSSES PREVENTION OF ATHLETE'S FOOT

My feet are killing me! Who hasn’t uttered that at the end of an extra long day? But it doesn’t have to be that way — many common foot problems are preventable and treatable, says Toronto-based podiatrist Dr. Robert Chelin. Athlete's foot is caused by fungus, and is one of the better known foot maladies. Look for scaling and flaking, especially on the soles and in between the toes; itching; and areas that are inflamed.

“To avoid it, don’t walk barefoot,” Chelin says, pointing out it’s often picked up in communal areas such as change rooms. “Dry your feet properly, always change your socks and give your shoes a chance to dry out if perspiration is heavy.” The fungus needs a warm moist environment to incubate, and shoes are the perfect spot.
