A bunion, which is an abnormal bump on the big toe joint caused by enlargement of the joint, may cause significant pain, disfigurement, and deformity. When the joint swells, it can place pressure on the other toes, causing them to crowd together and extend outside the normal foot profile. Although bunions are a relatively minor foot ailment, it is important to obtain treatment while in the earlier stages. With prompt treatment by a skilled foot specialist, most patients can enjoy improved foot comfort.

Causes of bunions

Bunions are caused by ongoing pressure on the feet, particularly on the big toe. Some common sources of such pressure include:

  • Certain medical conditions, including arthritis.
  • Inherited structural defects of the foot.
  • Shoe fit – stress points from high-heeled shoes or shoes that fit too tightly.

Symptoms of bunions

Symptoms of bunions include:

  • "Hammertoes" (bent or claw-like toes).
  • Corns and calluses between the toes.
  • Ingrown toenails.
  • Misshaped joint area of big toe.
  • Pain, redness, and/or swelling of the big toe’s joint.
  • Restricted movement of the big toe.
  • Thickening of the skin around the toes.

Treatment for bunions

Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics prides itself with providing conservative care for all foot conditions whenever possible.  That means that we avoid medications and surgery whenever possible.  We have only had a handful of patients who required surgery from all the hundreds and hundreds that we see.  Never have a patient undergo surgery if they are symptom-free for cosmetic reasons only.  Remember that your feet are vitally important for mobility and without them a persons quality of life is severely diminished.

Some of the treatments that our Toronto Foot Clinic recommends is first wearing the proper foot wear.  That means shoes with a toe box large enough to accommodate the forefoot without compression.  Secondly we have the patient invest in custom orthotics in order to support the foot in the correct biomechanical position.  If the person is suffering with symptoms such as pain or swelling, lack of mobility we have them do stretches, exercise, ice as well we perform physical therapy in our clinic.

The types of physical therapy available at our Toronto Foot Clinic are low volt, interferential current ultrasound, laser. shockwave, mobilization, activator and active release technique.  If you or a loved one would like to have your bunions treated 'naturally, please do not hesitate to contact us at 416-465-8737 so we can begin to get you on the road to health as soon as possible.
