AUSSIE PODIATRIST GRATEFUL THAT HE SAVED LIVES THIS YEAR

As Mandurah podiatrist Ben Trewben looks back over the past year, he is grateful for potentially saving several people’s lives. “I’ve picked up two melanomas on the feet, which can be quite deadly,” he said. “I’ve picked up deep vein thrombosis, a blockage in the artery, which if left 48-hours could have been very bad. “In a basic assessment, I picked up an irregular heartbeat, which increases the risk of stroke.” Drewben was also on the ball when he noticed a toe infection and referred the patient to hospital. “She ended up in Fiona Stanley and lost a toe, where if it was left, it could have been a leg,” he said.

Trewben said people did not realize all that was involved in podiatry. “They think we just cut toenails, but it’s a lot more in depth,” he said. Trewben said it was a wonderful feeling when a patient came in and gave him a hug because he had probably saved their life. “It’s very satisfying,” he said.
