  • ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO CONSUMPTION ARE THE TWO BIGGEST FACTORS IN LIFE EXPECTANCY

THE AVERAGE CANADIAN SPENDS MORE THAN A DECADE OF THEIR LIFE DEALING WITH DISEASES SUCH AS DIABETES, CANCER, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, ETC. WHICH IS ONE OF THE DOWNSIDES OF LIVING LONGER.  MEDICAL AND PUBLIC-HEALTH ADVANCES HAVE MADE A DRAMATIC INCREASE IN LIFE EXPECTANCY OVER THE LAST FEW DECADES.

A STUDY REPORTED IN THE NATIONAL POST FROM A TEAM OF RESEARCHERS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ZURICH OF OVER 16,000 PEOPLE FOUND THAT MALES WHO SMOKED, DRANK REGULARLY AND WERE INACTIVE HAD ONLY A 35% CHANCE OF BEING ALIVE A DECADE AFTER THEIR 75TH BIRTHDAY THAN OTHERS OF THE SAME AGE. WOMEN AT 75 YEARS OF AGE WHO WERE ACTIVE WITH A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE HAD A 75% CHANCE OF BEING ALIVE A DECADE ON.

THE STUDY CONCLUDED THAT LIFESTYLES HAD LITTLE IMPACT ON DEATH RATES FOR THOSE AGED 45 TO 65, BUT HAD MAJOR CONSEQUENCES FOR THOSE OVER 65 YEARS OF AGE WITH SMOKING INCREASING THE CANCE OF PREMATURE DEATH BY 57%.  IT WAS THUS CONCLUDED THAT A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CAN HELP YOU LIVE 10 YEARS LONGER.   ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION, DIET, EXERCISE EACH INCREASED THE RISK FACTER BY 15% EACH.
