  • ACADEMY FOOT AND ORTHOTIC CLINICS HAS SOME VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING DIABETES TO SHARE

MANY PEOPLE ARE NOT AWARE THAT OVER 1700 PEOPLE IN ONTARIO LAST YEAR HAD THEIR FOOT AMPUTATED DUE TO COMPLICATIONS FROM DIABETES AND THAT 85% OF THESE AMPUTATIONS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY PROPER FOOT CARE.

THAT IS PART OF MY FOOT CLINICS MISSION WHICH IS TO EDUCATE OUR PATIENTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING SURE THAT IF THEY HAVE ANY FAMILY MEMBERS OR LOVED ONES THAT HAVE DIABETES TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE UNDER CHIROPODY CARE FOR THEIR FEET.  OUR GOAL IS TO SAVE DIABETIC PATIENTS FROM UNNECESSARY AMPUTATIONS.

FINDINGS FROM THE 2012 PREMIER'S REPORT ON DIABETES

1. DIABETICS ARE PRONE TO FOOT ULCERS THAT CAN DEVELOP FROM A SMALL UNNOTICED CUT TO BECOME A LIFE-THREATENING INFECTION OR GANGRENE.

2. MOST DIABETIC FOOT ULCERS AND AMPUTATIONS CAN BE PREVENTED BY EDUCATION, MONITORING AND TREATMENT.

3. PREVENTATIVE CARE  IS THE PREFERRED OPTION TO AVOID THE 'PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL TRAUMA' OF AMPUTATIONS

4. DIABETIC FOOT ULCERS COST THE CANADIAN HEALTH-CARE SYSTEM MORE THAN $150 MILLION A YEAR.

5. RNAO GUIDELINES CALL FOR FOOT ASSESSMENTS AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR, IF NOT MORE OFTEN FOR THOSE AT RISK, FOOT CARE EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONALLY FITTED FOOTWEAR.
