  • ACADEMY FOOT AND ORTHOTIC CLINICS DISCUSSES HOW TO PROTECT YOUR FEET DURING HOCKEY

WHEN THE SEASONS CHANGE THAT USUALLY MEANS DIFFERENT SPORTS ARE PLAYED TO CORRESPOND WITH THE WEATHER.  AT OUR FARM IN SCARBOROUGH WE MAINTAIN A 40 FOOT BY 100 FOOT HOCKEY RINK AND SATURDAY NIGHT IS TRULEY HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA AT THE HARDY'S.  UNFORTUNATELY LAST YEAR WAS THE ONLY YEAR WE WERE SKUNKED IN THE LAST 6.  IT IS WELL LIT AND WE MAINTAIN A FIREPLACE ON COLD DAYS AS WELL AS A LITTLE HOT CHOCOLATE.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT HOCKEY PLAYERS YOU USUALLY THINK ABOUT CONCUSSIONS, LOST TEETH AND BROKEN NOSES.  UNFORTUNATELY 27% OF TODAYS HOCKEY INJURIES OCCUR IN THE LOWER LIMB AND FOOT INJURIES ACCOUNT FOR OVER 10% OF ALL INJURIES. SOME COMMON INJURIES THAT OCCUR TO THE FOOT ARE SKATE BITE OR LACE BITE WHICH IS THE RESULT OF A SKATE TONGUE THAT IS TOO STIFF AND LACED TOO TIGHT.  THE TONGUE AND LACES PUT PRESSURE ON THE FRONT OF THE ANKLE WHICH LEADS TO PAINFUL TENDONITIS.  FRACTURES AND LACERATIONS CAN OCCUR DUE TO PUCK INJURIES WHICH COME AT THE LOWER LIMB AT HIGH SPEED OR BLOWS FROM A STICK OR SKATE FROM ANOTHER PLAYER. ALSO POORLY FITTING SKATES CAN CAUSE MANY INJURIES.  SKATES AND FOR THAT MATTER SKI BOOT FIT DIFFERENTLY THAN REGULAR SHOES AND BOOTS, SO YOU HAVE TO PAY EXTRA ATTENTION WHEN BUYING SKATES OR SKI BOOTS AND SHOULD ONLY BE FITTED BY A PERSON KNOWLEDGABLE IN THEIR FIELD.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY DR. HARDY AND MARZ HARDY, D.Ch., B.Sc., PODIATRIC MEDICINE, TORONTO CHIROPODIST AND TORONTO FOOT SPECIALIST AND THE TEAM FROM ACADEMY FOOT AND ORTHOTIC CLINICS.
