Orthotics Help College Athlete Get Back into the Game As a result of subsequent injuries to the feet, college athlete Justin Garrett spent nearly the entire 2013 season off the field. The Auburn junior suffered both a sprained left foot and a broken right foot back in 2013. Garrett’s injuries prevented him not only from participating in spring practices, but even forced him to relinquish his Star safety position to Robenson Therezie Took.

The underlying problem behind Garrett’s injuries was actually an undetected case of flat feet. Now Garrett wears orthotic insoles to assist with arch support as well as wears wide-fitting cleats for added comfort.  Although Garrett did not return to his starting position upon his return, he says he is content just to be in the game.

Orthotics can alleviate the effects of foot and ankle symptoms. If you have issues of the feet, see chiropodist Marz Hardy of Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics.  Hardywill address your foot and ankle needs.

What are Ankle Foot Orthotics?

Orthotics are physical aids used to support weak limbs or direct the proper function of limbs. Often they are used to support the ankle and foot. Such orthotics are known as AFOs. AFOs help strengthen the muscles or train them to function in the proper position. AFOs can also benefit muscles that need to be lengthened or loosened.

Why might you need orthotics?

Orthotics are often prescribed when someone is suffering from diseases that affect the musculature, like polio and multiple sclerosis. However, more common conditions like arthritis and stroke, or those that “toe in”, may also require orthotics.

Modern orthotics have improved dramatically from the metal braces of previous years. Many of today’s orthotics are made of lightweight plastics and other advanced materials to provide new levels of comfort and support. Often the orthosis is designed in a rigid L shape that is contoured to the calf and flesh colored.

prince georgePrince George was seen sporting 1950’s classic shoes, since then, sales have catapulted.  Oadby Company Early Days designed the leather shoes Prince George seemed to happily enjoy.

George’s footwear has caused a surge not only in sales but in demand, ultimately leaving the company little decision but to expand to help with the new orders.

"I looked at the photo of Prince George and his parents on tour in New Zealand and recognized the shoes he was wearing. I still cannot believe it – we've been making shoes since 1952 and now they're being worn by a future king," said Paul Bolton, managing director of Early Days. Many styles and colors of this shoe have been reportedly sold out.

Good footwear choices for the young are important, and proper maintenance of the feet works hand in hand. To help care for your children’s feet, see chiropodist Marz Hardy of Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics.  Hardycan treat your child’s podiatric needs.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet in childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care from birth to school-age.

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

· Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet
· Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet

  • Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus
  • Be watchful of any pain or injury
  • Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible
  • Comfortable, protective shoes should usually be worn
