TORONTO PODIATRIST, MR. CHELIN IN AN ARTICLE IN THE TORONTO STAR ON 25/06/2013 STATES, "TOENAIL FUNGUS, TECHNICALLY CALLED ONYCHOMYCOSIS, MAKES NAILS BECOME THICKER AND TURN YELLOW AND CAN MAKE THEM BRITTLE TOO.  IN SOME CASES THE FUNGUS GETS EASY ACCESS AFTER THE NAIL IS INJURED AND THAT BOTH MEN AND WOMEN SHOULD AVOID USING THE SAME NAIL CUTTING INSTRUMENTS.  'WOULD YOU SHARE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH WITH YOUR WIFE?  PROBABLY NOT...SO DON'T SHARE YOUR CLIPPERS.  (I FIND THAT LAST STATEMENT COMICAL AS WHY WOULDN'T YOU SHARE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH WITH YOUR WIFE AS YOU KISS AND SHARE AN INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP WITH HER OR HIM).  MAKE SURE YOU ARE AWARE OF THE HYGIENE PRACTISES OF THE PEDICURIST AND THAT THEY USE CLEAN EQUIPMENT."

PODIATRIST, MR. CHELIN STATES, "DON'T GO BAREFOOT IN PUBLIC PLACES.  FUNGI LIVE EVERYWHERE -- ESPECIALLY IN PLACES LIKE PUBLIC POOLS, FITNESS CLUBS OR HOTEL ROOMS.  WEAR LIGHT SANDALS OR THONGS TO PROTECT YOUR FEET."

CHELIN GOES ON TO SAY THAT SOAKING YOUR FEET IN VINEGAR 3 TIMES A WEEK CAN CLEAR SOME INFECTIONS.  YOU CAN ALSO USE TOPICAL CREAMS, ORAL MEDICATIONS OR REMOVE THE NAIL.

OUR FOOT CLINIC DOES NOT AND WILL NOT PRESCRIBE ORAL MEDICATIONS FOR FUNGAL INFECTIONS DUE TO THE HIGH RISK OF KIDNEY AND LIVER DAMAGE AND IS NOT WORTH THE RISK.  OUR CLINIC HAS INVESTED IN THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY FOR TREATING FUNGAL TOENAILS, LASER.  IT IS EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE WITH NO SIDE EFFECTS.  IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE WOULD LIKE HONEST, COMPETENT ADVICE REGARDING FOOT CARE, PLEASE CONTACT US AT 416-465-8737.

TORONTO PODIATRIST, MR. ROBERT CHELIN IN AN ARTICLE IN THE TORONTO STAR ON 25/06/2013 DISCUSSES BUNIONS.  TORONTO PODIATRIST MR. CHELIN STATES, "A BUNION IS A 'SOFT TISSUE MALADY' THAT EVENTUALLY LEADS TO THE ENLARGEMENT OF THE BIG TOE JOINT, WHICH THEN LEADS TO PAIN AND IRRITATED SKIN.  IN SEVERE CASES THE BIG TOE CAN START TO TURN INWARDS.  BUNIONS ARE HEREDITARY, AND CAN ALSO BE CAUSED BY ILL FITTING SHOES, HIGH HEELS (SUFFERERS ARE MOSTLY WOMEN) AND VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, SUCH AS WALKING ON CONCRETE TOO OFTEN."

FOR YOU INFORMATION OUR FOOT CLINIC DOES NOT BELIEVE THAT WALKING ON CONCRETE CAN CAUSE OR EXACERBATE THE FORMATION OF BUNIONS.  WALKING ON ANY SURFACE WITH A GENETIC PREDISPOSITION WITHOUT THE PROPER SUPPORT  SUCH AS CUSTOM ORTHOTICS CAN AGGRAVATE BUNIONS.

PODIATRIST, MR. CHELIN STATES, "IF THEY ARE RECOGNIZED EARLY, BUNIONS CAN BE EASILY TREATED. THEY HAVE BUNION NIGHT SPLINTS LIKE (TEETH) RETAINERS, THAT IN MILD CASES THE OVERNIGHT SPLINT OFTEN GRADUALLY STRAIGHTENS OUT THE TOE.  IT IS IDEAL TO CORRECT THE MALADY AT AN EARLY STAGE BUT THAT IN EVEN THE MORE SEVERE CASES THERE IS HOPE.  THE ENLARGED AREA CAN BE 'SHAVED' OR AN OPERATION TO ALIGN THE TOE TO ITS PROPER ANGLE."

ACADEMY FOOT AND ORTHOTIC CLINICS BELIEVES IN CONSERVATIVE FOOT CARE WHENEVER POSSIBLE AND AVOID THE USE OF MEDICATIONS AND SURGERY WHENEVER POSSIBLE.  THERE IS NO DRUG OR SURGERY THAT DOES NOT HAVE SIDE EFFECTS.  IN SOME CASES BECAUSE OF COMPLICATIONS THE PATIENT ACTUALLY ENDS UP WORSE AFTER THE SURGERY THAN BEFORE.  IN THE CASE OF THE FOOT THIS IS NOT GOOD NEWS AS WITHOUT A FUNCTIONING FOOT A PERSON COULD FIND THEMSELVES IN MORE DIFFICULTY IN REGARDS TO MOBILITY.  WE WOULD NEVER TELL A PERSON WHO HAS A BUNION TO HAVE SURGERY FOR PURELY COSMETIC REASONS AS COSMETIC FOOT SURGERY IS BORDERING ON THE UNETHICAL.

ACADEMY FOOT AND ORTHOTIC CLINICS TREATS MANY PATIIENTS CONSERVATIVELY FOR BUNIONS AND ONLY A HANDFUL HAVE HAD TO RESORT TO BUNION SURGERY.  THE TORONTO PODIATRIST WHOM WE REFER OUR PATIENTS TO FOR BUNION SURGERY IS SHELDON NADAL, A VERY PERSONABLE AND KNOWLEDGEABLE TORONTO PODIATRIST.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE HONEST, COMPETENT ADVICE ON FOOT RELATED ISSUES, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT OUR FOOT CLINIC AT 416-465-8737.

http://newsfix.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Ankle-sprains.jpgAccording to research lead by the University of Pittsburgh, osteoporosis is a cause of concern in danger issues for foot fractures for older women.

A group of 10,000 women aged 65 and older were surveyed and tested by walking a certain distance. The team then focused on those who went on to have a foot or ankle fracture. Those who were more likely to have a foot fracture had osteoporosis, over 50, and less physically active. Younger, overweight, and more physically active were to have ankle fractures.

If you are suffering from any podiatric conditions that may be related to age you should seek out the care of a chiropodist such as Marz Hardy of Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics. Dr. Hardy can evaluate your problem as well as provide you with treatment options.

Geriatrics and Podiatry

When people age, some common issues that may occur are bone density loss, dry skin, poor circulation, and even rough brittle nails. These issues may also affect your foot health without care.

It is important to take care of your feet because feet that are injured or diseases can affect your overall health and having painful feet hinders your ability to do daily activities.

As we age, health problems become more likely, so it is essential to visit your doctor for check-ups. It is recommended to check your feet frequently for any possible cuts, bruises, swelling, corns, etc.

Cracked or dry feet can be treated by applying moisturizer. It is also important not to wear old socks because the older the sock, the higher the chance of exposure to bacteria.

Lastly, good foot health means you can have a more active lifestyle.

If you have any questions, please contact our office in Toronto, ON. We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.
