CUSTOM FOOT ORTHOTICS VERSUS CORTICOSTEROID INJECTIONS FOR PLANTAR FASCIITIS

A new study performed compared the effects of custom foot orthotics to corticosteroid injections for patients with plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is a condition in which the plantar fascia on the bottom of the foot gets inflamed and irritated due to improper footwear, flat feet, high arches and multiple other causes. When patients have plantar fasciitis they usually have heel pain or arch pain which is often debilitating.

Some options for treatment include: stretching, icing, tennis ball rolling, water bottle rolling, custom foot orthotics, corticosteroid injections and plantar fasciotomy.

Corticosteroid injections for plantar fasciitis is usually a short-term fix in which case custom foot orthotics is a long term solution. The study reports that majority of people found more relief with orthotics as a long term solution. Individuals did have some relief with the corticosteroid for the first 4 but orthotics proved to have longer lasting results into the 12th week. Overall, both are effective for treating plantar fasciitis however long term lasting results with orthotics are more beneficial than receiving corticosteroid injections for short term relief.
